Will the Galaxy S7 Edge Clear-View Cover Scratch Up Your Screen?
The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are here. Launched at MWC 2016, both phones are now widely available for preorder around the world and will be available in stores in the US starting March 11. I've already preordered my Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, and overall I'm pretty excited about these two. Samsung has improved pretty much every gripe I had with the Galaxy S7 by adding a bigger battery, micro SD support, and making the camera more flush with the back. When I really think about it, there was only one other thing that ruined the Galaxy S6 Edge for me last year: Samsung's Official Clear View Cover.
My most popular video on Youtube (unfortunately) is the above unboxing and first look at the Galaxy S6 Edge Clear View Cover from Samsung. The case/cover is absolutely terrible. It scratches up the screen on your phone over time by allowing dust particles to become trapped between the case and phone. The issue was so widespread, I even wrote an article about it over on High on Android. Every day, at least 30 people comment on my video telling me how much they hate me for reviewing such an awful case. Of course, when I unboxed the cover....I had no idea it would scratch up my screen or theirs. This would all be in the past and forgotten (I'm a forgiving guy), except Samsung went and made another Clear-View cover for the S7 Edge.
Is the 2016 iteration any better? I headed out to preorder my S7 and S7 Edge a few nights ago at Best Buy and the Samsung rep there had one of the Clear-View covers on hand, so I took a quick look. From what I can tell, the 2016 model seems much more nicely constructed. The interior lining that touches the screen is made of a softer material that should be less prone to scratching the screen if dust becomes trapped inside. In addition, the corners are reinforced by a hard plastic that gives much more protection to the edges than last year. Samsung comments on the official product page:
"New cradle design allows for easy, snap-on installation and adds hard plastic protection to the corners of your device"
I'm fairly optimistic that the new Clear-View Cover design will not have the same catastrophe as last year. Of course, I'll have the actual case in hand for review as soon as possible, so look out for that on my Youtube channel!
